About
T.J. Colman
T.J. Colman is a writer, a parent of three sons, and a survivor of a long marriage built on coercive control. She writes memoir from the record, and through H.D. Publishing she helps others tell their own stories.
The record is the letters, journals, texts and shared documents written in the days they describe, so the books tell what happened rather than what memory has softened. The A Light in the Dark series follows one life from a childhood in which other people chose everything, through a marriage that ran on fear, to a transition, a separation from her children, and the slow work of coming back.
She writes for the people still inside a marriage like that, and for the families, friends and faith communities trying to understand what they are seeing. Her subjects are the ones she lived: domestic violence and coercive control, what it means to be queer in a family and a church that had no room for it, the loss of being cut off from your own children, and a woman's right to her own voice.
Five books. One life, taken back, one page at a time.
The names in these books have been changed to protect the people in them.
